Job Title: Scientist I R&D 

Job Location: Carlstadt, NJ (On-Site)

 

Position Summary/Objective: This is a technical laboratory position with the function of providing new material solutions for the design of new products. The polymer scientist in this position will synthesize and characterize new polymers as well as assess their suitability for application in various product areas (inks, coatings, pigment).

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

  • Scouts for new material concepts for suitability via literature, patents, etc., to develop approaches that can be utilized in current and future products.
  • Ability to synthesize new polymers/materials to create prototypes for application feasibility testing.
  • Relate the structures and chemical properties of polymers and/or composite materials to define links to critical to quality performance factors.
  • Develop and monitor process conditions during the development of raw materials that provides for understanding of process dynamics as well as control and ability to reproduce key material parameters.
  • Use proper statistical tools in assessing the boundaries or limits of analytical measures.
  • Administer the appropriate project management systems to maintain reporting and status updates.
  • Summarizes data in reports and/or presentations at regular intervals. Documents experimental work in a lab notebook using established best practices.
  • Ensures all ISO requirements are met and produces the necessary documentation to maintain compliance.
  • Follows Chemical Hygiene plan and looks for safety improvements.

 

Preferred Experience & Education:

 

  • Prefer Ph.D. degree in chemistry or polymer chemistry.  M.S. degree in chemistry or polymer chemistry with polymer synthesis experience will also be considered. 
  • Patent history and experience with inks and/or coating formulations a plus.

Technical Manager, Polymer Science

Shares regular verbal and written project/results updates and communicate timeline/status for assigned tasks and engages when scale of new material occurs.

 

Global Director, Material Science

Provide regular verbal and written project/results updates and communicate timeline/status for assigned tasks.

 

Polymer Science Team

Develops strong working relationships with current members involved with synthesis of new materials and is open to mentoring by senior staff.

 

Development Team Chemists/Scientist/Leaders

Develop an integrated knowledge of product formulation and component level understanding of material contributions to performance targets in order to support new product design by development teams

 

Engineering Manager – Manufacturing and Pilot Processes/Process Engineer and Pilot Staff

Works closely with engineers to safely and efficiently scale up new materials.  Guides the appropriate in-process testing and sets final QC measures.
