Maintenance Manager - Newport, DE.
Purpose of the Job:
Lead and manage the Maintenance team at the Newport Site, driving a culture of reliability and continuous improvement. You will provide strategic directions to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective execution of routine and non-routine maintenance, including mechanical, instrument, electrical, process controls, and infrastructure items. By optimizing maintenance work processes, you will be responsible for improving equipment reliability while remaining focused on the departmental budget. You will oversee both Sun Chemical and contract employees, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture. As a key member of the Site Leadership Team, you will actively contribute to sitewide improvement initiatives, management actions, and operational reviews to uphold operational excellence and long-term asset reliability.
Educational Background:
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering is required.
- Alternative consideration: Science or business degrees, depending on relevant experience.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficiency in SAP is required.
- Experience in the design and maintenance of plant machinery and equipment is required.
- Implementation and management of maintenance work processes and procedures are required.
- Personnel and contractor administration with labor relations expertise is required.
- Financial acumen for departmental budgeting is required.
- Causal analysis/ root cause analysis is a plus.
Professional Experience:
- 7 to 10 years of technical experience in the Chemical or Refining industry is required.
- Strong exposure to maintenance principles and practices, assessed via Maintenance KPI’s, is required.
- Demonstrated success in supervisory roles with increasing responsibilities is required.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Ensure the application of all safety rules, assure Maintenance personnel and contract employees are aware of and employ safe working practices, and promote safety programs and behaviors.
- Support and continuously improve the maintenance strategy for the site, in partnership with technical maintenance leadership.
- Support and continuously improve the reliability strategies for the site
- Understanding of national, state, and local code for programmatic monitoring of key material elements of the site, including tanks, vessels, relief valves, and piping.
- Lead the development of maintenance goals, ensure implementation, monitor effectiveness, and take necessary actions to meet overall business objectives.
- Set objectives for staff consistent with business and department needs and hold them accountable for delivering results. Provide coaching and direction to ensure that they successfully meet those objectives. Track Team Performance for success (KPIs / Metrics).
- Manage talent development and succession planning for staff, including team development and building/maintaining an engaged workforce.
- Conduct job assignments considering developmental opportunities, train and coach employees so they can be successful.
- Ensure that required capabilities, essential skills, and precision work practices are maintained for all Sun and embedded contract maintenance personnel.
- Manage performance reviews, conflict resolution, consistent enforcement of rules and policies, change management, onboarding of new employees, and engaging in effective and clear communication.
- Ensure all aspects of the maintenance work processes are being followed, including notification, prioritization, planning, scheduling, execution, and feedback.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are executed in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.
- Plan and develop the schedule and scope for, and lead that plan for all shutdowns related to production and the interrelationship with maintenance.
- Manage the work execution of all employees. Ensure work execution productivity (wrench time) and first-time repair quality, supporting optimized maintenance cost.
- Establish and monitor defined maintenance metrics and KPIs.
- Monitor accomplishments, validate, and report performance-to-plan to show trends and provide analyses with an emphasis on early performance indicators for the site.
- Identify continuous improvement opportunities to enhance the overall maintenance work process and improve cost effectiveness and efficiency. Share with other areas and communicate lessons learned. Ensure consistent use of best practices within maintenance execution.
- Provide communication on the status of maintenance activities to appropriate stakeholders via reports, oral and written communications, as appropriate.
- Monitor and help to identify continuous improvement opportunities to enhance the overall maintenance work process and improve cost effectiveness and efficiency.
- Define and deliver the required level of maintenance to the operating units, working in conjunction with technical maintenance leadership.
- Recognize the need for and develop of outside specialty services contractors.
- Support and adhere to the principles of SunCare by protecting the environment, health, safety, and security of our employees, contractors, carriers, distributors, visitors, customers, and neighbors.
- Be knowledgeable of and follow all Environmental, Health and Safety practices including but not limited to: manage waste movements according to satellite and/or 90-day accumulation requirements, inspect air contaminant sources and institute corrective action for out-of-spec conditions, prevent releases into the sewer and/or storm water systems by following BMPs (best management practices), activate Sun emergency response procedures in case of spills or other emergencies.
