Safety Specialist - St. Charles
Day Shift
Under general direction of the site management, the Safety Specialist serves as a lead contact and assists the site with the development and the implementation of health and safety regulatory programs; develops procedures, training, and audit programs to enhance site Health & Safety programs; takes part in maintaining safe workplace for employees by assisting with the prevention of accidents and the handling of near miss, first aid, and recordable incidents and by maintaining and exceeding regulatory compliance; and assists the site to ensure that Health & Safety culture is integrated in a consistent manner into operations and supporting services.
Responsibilities:
- Performs H&S assignments using 5S and safety concepts and principles to anticipate, identify, evaluate, and mitigate HSE hazards for manufacturing, laboratory, and maintenance work areas and activities.
- Lead H&S improvement teams, conduct Job Safety Analysis, and represent H&S department in MOC meetings and coordinate with regulatory agencies, emergency responders, risk insurers, internal customers on safety issues.
- Ensure all incidents and near miss reports are investigated properly - with adequacy and completeness - and ensure that identified corrective actions are implemented and tracked to ensure sustainability to prevent re-occurrence.
- Represent the site with regulatory agencies and prepare and manage preparation of all H&S submittals to these agencies.
- Primary responsibility for developing and conducting plant H&S training and ensuring proper communication of health and safety issues.
- Conduct audits of the H&S programs, review results, and prepare and ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained; Review existing H&S policies and revised policies as needed.
- Assume role of ERT incident commander, provide ERT technical support, and maintain ERT equipment in conjunction with Plant Manager or delegate.
- Manage compliance, plant safety statistics/data management, recordkeeping, and reporting requirements.
- Implement and maintain/continue to improve H&S procedures and processes.
- Attend training as required to maintain the required certifications and act as a resource to site employees addressing health and safety concerns on the plant floor.
Required Education and Experience:
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in industrial safety, or associated area such as science or engineering
- 3+ years' experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably chemical processing
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills - with the ability to effectively address multiple client service requests and communicate to diverse audiences
- Clear understanding of OSHA regulations and H&S programs (including but not limited to emergency response, hazard recognition and control, HazCom, hot work, ergonomics, LOTO,
- confined space, etc.)
- Strong leadership and interpersonal ability to work cross-departmentally, with regulatory agencies at the local, state, and federal. Must interact with the public and other external parties constructively on H&S issues
- Able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
